Spider-Man is Unstoppable

The crackdown on Western-made toys in Iran would be funnier, were it not a microcosmic view into the paranoid mindset of the revolutionary regime in Tehran.  Immediately following Pahlavi’s departure, a counter-cultural riot of sorts played out; wherein absurd and sad displays of one-upmanship were performed in order to garner favor and security from the persecuting komitehs.  In Iran they call it “Westoxication,” and it’s an ever prominent concern in their political culture.  For the mullahs, this is an extension of warfare intended to chip the regime apart.  Art was destroyed, and Persian history (often influenced by imperialist occupiers) was leveled following the revolution.  Deep down, the government knows it’s a culture war they can’t compete in and win. 

Their concerns may be legitimate.  Call it Tom Friedman’s “Golden Arches” rule, or whatever you may like, but there’s a certain kind of power in free markets that can’t be denied.  Having worked with children, I’ve seen the awe-inspiring power of Spider-Man.  No matter the race, color or creed, little kids love Peter Parker (and why shouldn’t they?).  All of the bombs and bullets in the world can’t move mountains–and win over a generation of young people–the way he can.  That’s why you see the use of comforting Western images in Islamic propaganda; because it enables the extremists to use such comforting images to suit their own indoctrinating purposes.
