Goings On, etc.

Pardon the silence here on my blog.  I promise to be a more diligent blogger in the future, I swear.

In the meantime, my friend and blogger-extraordinaire Michael van der Galien has graciously invited me to be a co-blogger at his own website, The Van Der Galiën Gazette.  Michael has made a few adjustments to the site, and continues to make it bigger and better.  I’m honored to be a part of those plans.

My first post is up and ready for torching, so be a sport and go read it.

Roundup

Posted by Kevin Sullivan under Uncategorized

My apologies for the absence lately, but I shall be back for real real soon.  In the meantime, here are a few odds and ends:

  • Over at The Moderate Voice, Jason Steck writes on the possibility of a diplomatic window of opportunity with Iran.  Jason notes that this might in fact signal a diplomatic success for the Bush administration, albeit a fleeting one if they don’t approach it carefully;
  • Michael Yon continues his excellent work in Iraq, chronicling and photographing the battles in Baqubah; And
  • On a much lighter note, my friend Jesse has started a fantastic film blog, a must read for anyone interested in expanding their tastes beyond Michael Bay movies and Police Academy sequels (although I do love me a good Police Academy sequel).  Check out Jesse le Fou, the new kingpin of the Film Blogosphere…The Filmosphere.

Bobblespeak

Posted by Kevin Sullivan under Uncategorized

One of my new favorite blogs is The Bobblespeak Translations.  Bobblespeak takes the transcripts from various talking head political talk shows, and makes them a little more "truthy."  Or as they put it, it’s "What They’re Really Saying When They’re Saying What They’re Saying."

It’s a hilarious site, and here’s a snippet from this morning’s episode of Meet The Press:

Tim Russert: Ok Crocker the surge appears to be a total disaster of course that’s just the Pentagon talking — but it looks like these guys just can’t get along

Ambassador Ryan Crocker: the Surge is going like gangbusters the surge is surging in Al Anbar and Baghdad!!!

Timmeh: dood is this a hostage video??

Crocker: true the violence has moved out of Baghdad but that’s good news we opened up a Tastee Freeze downtown

Timmeh: well I admit that sounds tasty

Crocker: we’re only at the beginning of the Surge but so far it’s going great!!!

Russert: is this just wack-a-mole

CrackerJack: We have to control Baghdad and we’re wacking a lot of moles there — i’ve played that game and in the end it goes faster and faster its freaking me out!!!

And later…

Russert: the Dems suck they haven’t stopped the war

Dionne: they have to magically get more votes in the Senate or they will catch hell

York: what caused this problem is Reggie Walton is bad man

Russert: not Scooter’s crimes interesting

Timmy: Eugene yur black what’s up with Obama

Robinson: he’s a cool dude

Timmy: Fred beats up John McCain

O’Beirne: i luv Fred Thompson he’s smart, sexy, he’s got charisma — the real question is how wingnutty is he

York: The crazies don’t like their choices they want a real wacko

Dionne: Southern Men luv a Rich Hollywood Actor Lobbyist

Timmeh: Hillary is strong

Dionne: she’s got the money and liberal street cred

York: Hillary’s smart and Obama’s inspirational

Robinson: Obama is playing it cool he’s like a jazz trumpeter in a club and it’s only 9:00 pm dood’s got all night

Russert: But the primaries! Six months! I’ve got my eraserboard ready!

Ace of Asinine

Posted by Kevin Sullivan under Uncategorized

Just so people don’t think I only pick on the Left-Wing Pottysphere, here is a fine example of what not to say while trying to engage in a debate on masculinity (courtesy Matthew Yglesias).  As usual, potty talk has been adapted and emphasized:

"I really think that questioning others’ masculinity is a game probably better left to people who haven’t had more POKEMON in and out of them than a Tyson Chicken regional distribution center."

This, apparently, was a jab made by Ace of Spades in response to Glenn Greenwald.  Classy.

Thanks to Michael van der Galien for his kind words today.  Michael highlighted some of my thoughts on the Edwards terrorism plan, and added his own words of wisdom to boot:

It is very simple: the Democrats have, for years, been portrayed as soft on terrorism. People made jokes, for years, that the Democrats would like to hug terrorists; send them to a psychologist; give them some money and food; talk to them, like reasonable creatures, etc. Time and time again, Democrats / Democratic voters tried to fight these accusations by saying that Democrats are just as tough on terrorism as the Republicans, that they can be trusted with national security and that they truly – yes truly – understand the threat terrorism poses to the US. Now, Edwards comes in and reaffirms the caricature Republicans created.

Couldn’t agree more.
